About This Journal

FIVE: The Claremont Colleges Journal of Undergraduate Academic Writing is an online open access journal published in Scholarship@Claremont. FIVE is a collaborative partnership of the Writing Centers of the five undergraduate Claremont Colleges and the Claremont Colleges Library and is part of a larger network of online open access publications supported by the Claremont Colleges Library.

FIVE publishes academic papers written by undergraduate students at Pomona College, Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, and Pitzer College and offers an opportunity for students to gain experience in the publication process. All submissions go through a blind review process. The Board of Reviewers and the Editorial Board include students, faculty, and librarians from the five undergraduate colleges and the library.

As an open-access journal our goal is to increase the availability of student academic writing. We also offer students an opportunity to gain experience in the publication process: students act as peer-reviewers and editors of the journal. Thus FIVE provides both a channel for publication and a hands-on resource for students.

The timing of publication of new issues of FIVE may vary at the discretion of the Editors.

The work of many individuals makes the publication of FIVE possible. The Editors would like to thank all the students who have submitted papers to be considered for publication. We would especially like to thank the 2011-2012 Writing Center Directors at each of the 5Cs: Pam Bromley, Pomona College; Glenn Simshaw, Scripps College; Christine Crockett, Claremont McKenna College; Wendy Menefee-Libey, Harvey Mudd College; and Paul Miller, Pitzer College. Without their enthusiasm for the project, their contributions to the planning process, and their support, FIVE would not have come into being.
