Title

(dis)Orientation Tour of the Claremont Colleges

Award Date

2019

Description/Abstract

Students at the Claremont Colleges encounter the same paths, plants, and landscapes each day of their (approximately) four years on these campuses. But rarely are we encouraged to consider our surroundings’ indigenous history, nor the ways that our respective Colleges have altered the land we occupy for the grand project of our higher education. This project aims to situate the utopian and progressive rhetoric of each College’s landscaping practices within the indigenous context of the land on which they stand. Furthermore, this project is interested in conducting an intersectional and relational analysis of the process by which the landscaping initiatives of the Claremont Colleges unfold. By using the Special Collections at the Claremont Colleges Library, we created a story map with ArcGIS to guide you on a decolonized tour of the colleges.
