Abstract

It’s no surprise that we’re at a point in history where technology is advancing faster than ever before. People are looking to technology to make tasks quicker and more efficient. Machine learning algorithms are one set of tools that have been explored more and more in the past decade. Specifically, individuals in the field of law and healthcare are finding ways to use the algorithms to reduce problems such as court bias in law and physician burnout in healthcare. While there is a lot of potential for this technology to make a huge positive impact, there are still problems that exist in the algorithms that can lead to major consequences. This paper looks at how machine learning algorithms are currently being used and offers recommendations for how to improve them to work fairly and efficiently.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
