Abstract
In this paper, I explore the impacts of highly skilled immigrants on innovation. Using IPUMS Current Population Surveys from 1995-2019, I analyze the relationships between the immigrant labor force and patent applications submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office. I use a panel regression model, controlling for state and year fixed effects as well as variables within the state that may impact patents. I find that there is a positive, statistically significant relationship at the 5% confidence level between the population share of college-educated immigrants and patent applications at the state level.
