Abstract

In thinking about the rise of sustainable eating in mainstream food systems, this thesis seeks to explore the question: how can farm-to-table food systems and urban agriculture be reframed and restructured to be more inclusive in its mission to achieve food justice? Florence Fang Community Farm in Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP), San Francisco serves as a focal point for this thesis as it provides an inclusive framework of farm-to-table agriculture in its mission to achieve a holistic vision of food justice for BVHP residents. This holistic form of food justice, and framework for this thesis, encompasses the nutritional, cultural, and community values of food and food production which the farm achieves by providing a space for low income, residents of color to practice food sovereignty, cultural celebration, and community building. In relation to threats of climate change, capitalism, and gentrification, the work of this farm and similar farm-to-table models becomes important in rethinking mainstream food systems to incorporate principles of sustainability, ethicality, and food justice.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
