Abstract

This thesis explores how the Kickapoo nation challenges Western definitions of sovereignty and mobility by using settler-state legal frameworks to protect their indigenous nationhood. Their experience shows that indigenous sovereignty does not need validation by colonial standards but must be respected as sovereign equals. The Kickapoo offer a model for resisting the limitations of the international order and advancing indigenous rights on the world stage.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
