Abstract
Emotional intelligence (EI) is a form of intelligence that is distinct from IQ and the big five personality traits that can be learned. It is an important tool to leverage in the workplace. However, the application and perception differs between males and females. This paper explores the differences in male and female leadership styles and how that impacts their perception in the workplace. In doing so, it identifies challenges that women in leadership face balancing expectations, their natural leadership form, and perceptions. This paper then discusses tactics research has identified to mitigate these challenges. These concepts are reinforced with case studies of two well known leaders and two leaders at the student level. The case studies are used to exemplify the difference in perception between the genders and leadership style as well as the strategies women can use to mitigate challenges with perception.
