Abstract

From a young age we are able to know when something is unfair, even if we don’t have the ability to name and or express that feeling. What happens when this feeling is directed at your family? This proposed study aims to investigate children’s perceptions of parental differential treatment (PDT) as well as how these perceptions impact sibling relationships, specifically in adolescence. Two measures will be used to measure PDT using the Sibling Inventory of Differential Experience, SIDE, (Daniels and Plomin, 1985), and the quality of sibling relationships using the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire, SRQ, (Furman and Buhrmester, 1985). Results should indicate that perceived higher PDT is a predictor for poorer sibling relationship quality. It is also expected that children’s perceptions of PDT will align with what is observed by researchers. The proposed study could give insights to parents and caregivers about how PDT is perceived by their children and the way it impacts their greater family dynamic.
