Abstract

This paper examines the limitations of current Western-dominated ocean governance frameworks and advocates for a more holistic approach that integrates Indigenous knowledge. It argues that existing systems and the blue economy often disregard Indigenous values, leading to the dispossession of resources and the undermining of traditional practices. The research in this paper uses a mixed-methods approach, including primary works by Indigenous authors, government documents, and case studies of the Māori people in the Pacific Islands and various Indigenous groups in the Bering Strait region.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
