The Economic Implications of Hosting the NBA Finals on a County’s Personal Income, GDP Per Capita, and Unemployment Rate

Robert Webb

Abstract

Though the public general knowledge was to tell you that the performance of a local professional sports team was to be beneficial for the local economy, academic literature was to say otherwise. The National Basketball Association Finals are said to create jobs, increase revenue, and increase personal income throughout the local community but the case is that it really does not. There is no significant correlation between a winning basketball team and its local economy as hosting the NBA finals does not have much effect on the local economy of a county.
