Abstract
Leading creativity and innovation efforts is a critical task in our dynamic, competitive, global business environment. As creativity and innovation involve knowledge work, it is imperative to ask how best to lead knowledge workers. In this manuscript, we map the four phases of the creativity and innovation process onto the four key leadership activities of empowering, transformational, directive and transactional leadership, using shard leadership theory as a backdrop. Together, we believe our model offers a useful heuristic for leading the creativity and innovation process in the age of knowledge work.
