Abstract
Los Angeles is a city with storied history in film, race, and culture. My thesis is at the intersection of these defining qualities, seeing how the rise of thoughtful, independent filmmaking, compared to large studio blockbusters, has led to media more representative of the ever-diversifying landscape, and how that correlates to intercultural relationships. This study is loosely anchored in the focal point of the 1970s. Though correlation is not causation, life imitates art and art imitates life. Focusing mainly on communities of color, most notably the Black community, my aims through this paper are to understand a complicated city through its people and one of its oldest pastimes.
