Abstract

This thesis profiles western economic thinkers from Adam Smith to Joseph Schumpeter. It focuses on the role of technology and its associated variants (terms like machinery, invention, and innovation) within developmental theories. This historiography demonstrates that the classical school placed considerable emphasis on technology’s central role in economic development and progress. Their thoughts were incorporated into Schumpeter’s formal innovation economic theories, demonstrating that classical thought was precursory to innovation economics. Additionally, this account captures the rise and fall of classical economic theory.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
