Abstract
In this thesis, I analyze why the current moment is pivotal in the evolution of institutional advancement in the United States, particularly in small private colleges. Until recently, the field of institutional advancement was continually progressing as the fundraiser's job became increasingly professionalized. However, little has changed since Baby Boomers took over the workforce and the country saw a mass proliferation of nonprofit organizations. Ultimately, I find that for nonprofits and advancement offices to be successful, they will have to make strategic pivots to engage new audiences. They will have to differentiate new generations from those before them, often engaging informally and nonlinearly. Colleges and universities must compete with and complement in addressing widespread societal issues such as climate change and inequality. Finally, I conclude that the integration of engagement officers, a position just now becoming incorporated in the field, will be crucial to the success of private higher education going forward.
