Abstract

The question of democratic liberalism has been central to political discourse in the United States since the first days of the country. This thesis paper will address democracy and liberalism separately such as to both demonstrate that the two terms are not necessarily conducive to each other, and to consider the possibility that too much democracy may be damaging to liberalism. I will then consider how the United States came to be a successful liberal democracy, and I will finish with a consideration of the phenomena that have contributed to a decline in American liberalism leading up to 2021.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
