Abstract

Employing various datasets, this thesis examines the effects of COVID-19 and associated containment measures, regional economic interdependence, and domestic monetary policy on the stock market returns of various countries in Latin America. Through two main fixed-effects models and additional regressions, this paper finds some evidence for regional interdependence and limited evidence for the adverse effects of COVID-19 cases, deaths, and containment measures. Insufficient data complicates establishing conclusive results regarding the effects of monetary policy on Latin American stock market returns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
