Abstract
This thesis attempts to understand the complexity of Peru's national identity through the representation of indigenous communities in contemporary Peruvian media. I will explore several vital questions regarding indigenous representation and agency by analyzing director Oscar Catacora's debut film, Wiñaypacha, and Claudia Llosa's international success, La Teta Austada. I will attempt to answer – how the representation of indigenous communities in contemporary Peruvian cinema reveals about/reflect the country's evolving national identity? And what do these representations say about the national healing after Peru's internal conflict in the 80s and 90s?
