Abstract

In this paper I explore the effect of remote work designation on quit levels by industry in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using JOLTS data from 2019-2022, I analyze this relationship using a linear regression framework while controlling for hires, job openings, and layoffs and discharges. I find that there is a negative, statistically significant relationship at the 5% level between the remote work percentage of an industry and its difference between its quit rate pre and post pandemic. I also perform text mining analysis of Indeed job descriptions through a random forest classification model to explain qualitative trends in remote work.
