Abstract
This paper examines the impact of the implementation of big data and analytics technology on the market valuation of firms. We conduct a panel regression controlling for industry and assets, among other factors. Using 11 years of data and nearly 50 firms in the United States, we find that the announcement of a BDA investment is significantly and positively correlated with increased market value. We further find that more recent investments, particularly in the last 2-3 years, increase market share by more per investment than older investments. We posit this may have occurred as investors today are better informed of the benefit big data can provide to firms during a pandemic, and thus value these investments much higher than before.
