Abstract
With a mix of stories, essays, and memoirs, Devil in a New Dress Shirt explores the lingering problems of masculinity within the psyche of my generation. In terms of social progression, we have moved forward past some aspects of toxic masculinity, but I still feel that young men remain stuck in a liminal space with few male mentors who have experience with the self-reflection necessary to understand the difference between socialized gender and identity. The “devil” of masculine stoic attitudes and superiority complexes has simply shifted into a more subtle, but perhaps even more malevolent form. As is the case with most creative work, I do not want to impose a single, specific understanding of my writing onto any readers; however, I hope my work asks questions about sexuality, gender, materialism, aesthetic beauty, death, and a feeling of societal collapse.
