Abstract
This paper explores the reasons why the Afghan state collapsed after the United States and NATO forces left Afghanistan in 2021. Due to illegitimate democratic institutions, ineffective international support, a lack of ability in the security forces, and the presence of non-state actors, the Afghan state quickly fell to the Taliban after the departure of the international community.
