Abstract

This thesis is an intellectual history of Christian Wilhelm von Dohm's idea of improvement as expressed in the 1781 treatise On the Civic Improvement of the Jews. It seeks to understand an idea through the man who expressed it, the milieu from which he emerged, the motivation for its expression, and the sociopolitical environment with which it was concerned. It examines the idea of improvement through its manifestations in the enlightened absolutism of Frederick the Great, the social stratification of Prussian society, and Dohm's legislative proposal.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
