Abstract
Due to the corn crop’s necessity for ammonia-based fertilizers (such as urea and anhydrous ammonia) and the recent findings that ammonia prices have seen an increase in the past few weeks, we decided to study the impact that ammonia prices have on corn prices. The reliability of government data prompted the extensive use of it in our research. We use an ARIMA model to account for the time series aspect of our data. We found that the price of anhydrous ammonia has a statistically significant positive impact on the price of corn. However, with only a $0.003 increase in corn price per bushel, we find the total impact to be negligible. We control for the use of ethanol, the price of crude oil, total corn production, and the amount of nitrogen used.
