The Origins of Turkey’s Untamed Politics: Revolutionism, Revanchism, and Unfulfilled Promises in the Late Ottoman Empire
Abstract
In pursuit of presenting alternative perspectives on the contemporary recession in Turkish democracy, this paper employs a methodology that bridges the realms of political science and historical analysis. It reexamines historical documents, figures, and narratives through a political science lens, aiming to unveil overlooked insights and perspectives that have shaped Turkey’s political culture, characterized in this paper as “untamed politics.” Through this interdisciplinary approach, the study contributes to the ongoing scholarly discourse on Turkish democracy while also offering a methodological framework that holds relevance for the examination of political cultures in analogous contexts, such as Egypt and Tunisia.
