Abstract

This paper first questions whether solar energy is the best engine for African economic development by examining the technological and economic comparisons between solar, traditional energy sources, and other renewables. Second, this paper focuses on solar photovoltaic energy (PV) and examines its use cases at different scales and technology types. Third, it addresses the many challenges to developing adequate PV solar energy production in Africa by analyzing its financial, regulatory, and technological dimensions. Fourth, this paper explores case studies of two countries, Kenya and South Africa, that have made significant progress in rolling out solar energy. The conclusion of this thesis identifies critical policy tools needed to unlock the power of the sun across all of Africa.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
