Abstract
Over the past decade, as China has emerged with a stronger presence on the international stage, the U.S.-China relationship has begun to deteriorate. Trade between the two nations has decreased significantly and tensions surrounding Taiwan have skyrocketed, leaving many worried about the potential for military engagement. In this thesis, I examine the changing relationship between the United States and China through a critique of modern peace-conflict theories. To isolate a turning point in U.S.-China relations, I propose the application of a strategy-focused analysis to claim that the weakening relationship between the two nations is indicative of a shift from foreign policy decisions being made using linear logic, to paradoxical, strategic logic.
