Abstract
This thesis explores the recent rise of gentrification in Mexico City within the context of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic led to a lockdown in the U.S., prompting many corporate workers to shift to remote work. It also caused economic instability for many, and when it became apparent that the pandemic would become long-term, many remote workers opted to work from abroad where it would be more affordable to live. Mexico City then saw an influx of American remote workers that locals have claimed to have gentrified the city. This gentrification demonstrated through rising rent prices that displaced locals to the outskirts of Mexico City. Finally, I compare the female leadership of former mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, in Mexico City, and current mayor, Karen Bass, in Los Angeles as their partnership and policy exchanges reveal many promising possibilities for affordable housing and anti-gentrification policy.
