Abstract

Backlash to globalization has risen substantially in recent years, taking the form of Euroskepticism and populism in Europe. Opponents to free trade argue that import competition can hurt employment in primary and secondary economic sectors, which include agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. This paper tests this theory using data from France’s national statistics bureau, comparing imports and employment across 17 different economic sectors from 2000 through 2023 with a fixed effects regression model. It finds a statistically significant negative relationship between employment and imports, supporting the theory that increased exposure to import competition will harm employment.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
