Abstract
How does a nation define its identity: by language, ethnicity, religion, culture, politics—and in which combination? Tatarstan, an indigenous nation at the geographical center of the Russian Federation, develops its own set of answers. Counterintuitively in today’s multi-media world, it is theater that leads the Tatars to articulate who they are—and Tatar answers may surprise the nations we know far better.
