Abstract
The IBM manufacturing plant in San Jose, California, is geographically located between the San Andreas and Calaveras earthquake faults. Since 1977, an extensive program has been underway to reinforce the structures on the site and protect the equipment within the buildings. The goal of this program in event of a major earthquake is twofold:
- to protect personnel from injury;
- to return the plant to full operation within thirty days.
The program to protect the equipment and building contents is described. Guidelines are outlined telling what items were and were not addressed. Design loads and generalized solutions are presented. The benefits of this extensive program were dramatically illustrated by the structural performance of the equipment during a strong nearby earthquake in recent months.
