Abstract
Multimodular enzymes create a marvelous variety of polyketide (PK), nonribosomal peptide (NRP), and hybrid PK/NRP natural products by assembly line logic (Cane et al. 1998). Many of these compounds are themselves therapeutically useful or may provide inspiration for future drug discovery. The tight clustering of the biosynthetic genes and the modular organization of the enzymes that they encode provide excellent opportunities for reprogramming these natural product assembly lines.
