Abstract

This paper is a critical interrogation of the athletic industrial complex through a queer and feminist lens. It is divided into three chapters. The first chapter identifies how a strict enforcement of the gender binary that draws on essentialist narratives of biological sex has been weaponized to reinforce hegemonic systems of power that continue to marginalize transgender individuals within athletics. The second chapter interrogates athletics through the framework of childhood to illuminate and challenge how cultural assumptions and expectations regarding gender and sexuality are reinforced throughout childhood. The third and final chapter begins to reimagine a restructuring of athletics that is not reliant on the gender binary.

This submission, like all work in my opinion, is a living document and likely will continue to be edited, revised, and expanded upon.
