Abstract
Large national Chinese frameworks such as the Chinese Dream and Ecological Civilization currently provide frameworks for Xi Jinping’s governance of China. However, these large national frameworks have fractured into individual interpretations. Literature on Authoritarian Environmentalism and nongovernmental actors in Chinese Environmental Governance are examined to give a framework in which to view the following research. This thesis examines how these frameworks are interpreted and reinterpreted on the ground level through the lens of community level environmental education by three different actors: local government officials, individuals, and the community. Case studies are examined for each of these actors. We deflatten the conception around Chinese environmental governance and education and examine the agency of three different actors under the large national frameworks of the Chinese Dream and the Ecological Civilization.
