Abstract
But was alcohol the primary symbol of contention throughout Oceania? And in those areas where it was paramount, will an analysis of the missionary's socioeconomic background fully explain the debate between the mission and the beach communities? My responses are limited to evidence drawn from the histories of the Hawaiian and Gilbert Islands missions. Nevertheless, the trends suggested by these two missions indicate that a different perception of the missionary's activities is possible.
