Abstract

This paper examines the impact of technology growth and the dot com boom on total energy consumption throughout the United States. It specifically focuses on the period 1990-2017 measuring increases in the Information or technology sector employment and total energy consumption per capita over all fifty US states plus the District of Columbia. As global leaders search for solutions to decrease projected temperature rises and energy consumption, the impact of technology in the context of developmental and environmental economics has yet to be thoroughly examined. Modeled after the Environmental Kuznets Curve, this research found that in states with higher employment in the Information sector, there is a negative relationship with energy consumption per capita in said state.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
