Abstract

This project explores how President Obama both physically expanded and rhetorically legitimized the border-industrial complex. Through close analysis of a 2014 Obama speech, trends of capitalist and legal justifications appear in regards to who the Democratic Party deems as acceptable to immigrate to the U.S. Furthermore, this piece demonstrates how Obama created the violent enforcement system that Trump champions. Since Obama is a prominent member of the Democratic party, the pro-immigrant party, there was little pushback to his violent policies by liberals. This piece also explores how the border-industrial complex has provided a financial incentive for politicians and companies to militarize the border.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
