Abstract
My project, a series of prints, examines the aesthetic choices for the gardens at Scripps College and how they have affected my experience. I believe that the initial creation of the campus as a women’s college encouraged students to feel defined, walled in, and valued for their aesthetic worth. My project questions the idea that women are closer to nature and will, therefore, learn better in spaces with more gardens. The emphasis on the beauty of the campus is not accidental and connects to Scripps’ founding as a women’s college. Design choices were made to create what, at the time, was thought to be an ideal place for women to learn. My project aims to question these choices.
