Abstract
Rape is a significantly under-reported crime in Japan. This thesis exposes five dimensions of the Japanese society: gender socialization, language, behavioral norms, the sex industry, and the criminal justice system that contribute to the spread of gender biases and victim-blaming in the society, which in turn creates barriers for female rape victims to make formal report of the assault to the police in Japan.
