Abstract
The Santa Ana River is a highly-engineered river system. Divergent views of the river posit that it is dead or, alternatively, that it is a dangerous flood risk. Through an examination of the history of the Santa Ana River, specifically the introduction of grazing and the historic floods of the river, I showcase the reasons that settlers altered the river. Lastly, an examination of the river in its current state aims to reject the aforementioned views of the river and instead offer a view of the river as a highly-managed, quasi-natural river.
