Abstract

The key idea of this paper is to dissect the male gaze of the surf industry by looking at how it sexualizes female surfers in the media and explore how this affects women out in the water. I chose to pursue this topic because I am a female surfer and have experienced, first hand, many frustrating encounters out in the water due to my gender. I have also felt a lack of female centered surf media. My main argument is that there needs to be more female made and female centered surf films so that surf culture and its perception of women can change, and then eventually attitudes out in the water will change.
