Abstract
This collection of essays seeks to investigate cultural hierarchy in American life. The first essay uncovers the history of lowbrow and highbrow categorizations. The next revisits the moral panic around video games and argues for an optimistic approach to the potentials of gaming. The final explains the complex history between the literary world and fanfiction. The essays assert that rather than evaluating the merits of art and media, these classifications reinforce a hegemonic cultural identity.
