Abstract
This thesis is about how, under the hegemony of capitalism in today’s society, mass media is used as a tool by this very system to trap individuals into an endless cycle of self-disdain and “self-betterment” in an attempt to become this unreachable “lovable self,” both online and off, crafted by capitalism itself. Within it, I discuss the unreachability of self-love when aiming for a capitalist expectation created through mass media.
The second part of this thesis is an experimental video project, in which I use these themes as an umbrella, while focusing on the overwhelming weight of this online identity, and how it can take a toll on one’s mental health and relationship with self, along with the extent to which such a habit consumes one’s time and energy.
