Abstract

In this exploration, I utilize the form and style of the essay to depict a personal search for joy. Despite the common notion of joy as an extension of happiness and pleasure, I investigate how joy deviates from this misconception by considering different texts and portrayals of the emotion. I weave lyrical sections with more traditional writing to try and capture particular aspects of joy within the structure and language of my longform essay. I incorporate personal memories and ruminations in order to convey joy as a subjective and embodied experience.
