Abstract
In the United States, hundreds of thousands of youth are detained every year in juvenile detention centers. While these centers are meant to provide safety and care to youth while they await trial, in many occasions they experience horrible mistreatment and abuse at the hands of staff and even other youth. Some are locked inside their cells for almost 23 hours a day, while others are physically and sexually abused under the threat of a longer stay or more abuse. Following allegations, many institutions have made the decision to either close their doors or use their federal funding to reopen as rehabilitation centers.
