Abstract
The Untamed, a Chinese drama where the main romantic relationship between the two male protagonists is queer, represents one of the ways people can challenge and subvert homophobia, even though homosexuality is still thought of as a mental disorder in China. This thesis first offers a brief overview of the history of homosexuality in China in order to demonstrate that the concept of homosexuality has changed throughout time. It is followed by an in-depth analysis of the drama, demonstrating that contrary to popular opinion, the relationship between the two men is queer and not just a very intimate "friendship". I conclude by re-emphasizing that alternate forms of activism, such as The Untamed, are essential to the survival of human rights issues.
