Abstract
As works of art continue to accumulate with the passage of time, the question of how to create original work becomes increasingly pertinent to artists. There are several strategies and concepts that could be explored to make an attempt at the original. This thesis is a choreographic investigation of originality and addresses some of the personal artistic dilemmas and desires that surround the creative process. The dance work titled “The second most original thing you’ll ever see” experiments with abstract movement, introduces absurdism and explores contrasting aesthetics in order to subvert audience expectations and invoke curiosity. These overarching philosophical themes are tangibly translated into performance art that ironically claims its originality. As a meta reflection of an artist’s process on the concert stage, this investigation reconstructs what it means to create and perform “original” work.
