Abstract

Abstract

This study investigated factors that significantly influence whether faculty at international schools are supportive of Queer students. There are many variables that can promote or interfere with faculty support of Queer students, such as personal beliefs, school values, legality of homosexuality in the country, and more. Participants were recruited via convenience and snowball sampling. Participants began the online survey by reading a vignette they were randomly assigned that manipulated type of bullying incident, homophobic bullying incident or non-homophobic bullying incident, and manipulated intervention, description of colleague intervention or not. Participants completed measures of attitudes towards homosexuality, gay- related name-calling, compassion, likelihood of intervention, school environment, and demographics. As hypothesized, there was a significant relationship between the independent variable, intervention, and the dependent variable, participant support of Queer students. There also was a correlation between participants reporting having intervened in bullying situations before and rating that they would intervene in the bullying situation in the vignette. Contrary to the hypothesis, there was no significant impact of type of bullying, homophobic or not, on teacher support of students. This research may inform strategies on how to improve Queer student well-being in international schools and to address the distinct context of international schools.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
