Abstract
Japan is currently a super aged society. Consequently, various problems arise from the increase in the elderly population, and there are various works of literature written about these topics. An overview of Japan’s population is included to depict the social background that influences the content of the novels chosen for analysis. Before discussing the issues that are highlighted in the chosen novels, there is a discussion of rōjin bungaku [literature on the elderly] and how it has transformed over time. This thesis focuses on the depiction of the issues of elderly caregiving in contemporary Japanese novels and movies. The issues that are discussed are: (1) difference in care based on socioeconomic status, (2) burden of elderly caregiving on family caregivers, and (3) elderly caring for elderly (rō-rō kaigo).
