Abstract
This thesis is a chronological account of the creation of two art exhibition works: Room Studies and Paper Trails. Completed in the fall and spring semesters respectively, these installations examine themes of memory, space, and the mundane. In conjunction with Asian American Studies, an analysis of Tehching Hsieh’s and Patty Chang’s works frame documentation as a tool for legitimizing experiences and existences. Room Studies and Paper Trails prompt viewers to rethink how perceptions of identity form and affect interpretations of art and, subsequently, the artist.
