Abstract

In this series I explore the relationship between mental health, family, and relationships through figure paintings. While interweaving personal family photos and memories, my paintings are working towards revealing the tangled web of familial relationships in which we exist, and at the same time exploring themes of imposter syndrome, anxiety, and depression. The five types of imposter syndrome are represented in my work though the titles, which in turn relate to some of the figures in the paintings. I find that oil paint allows me to work in loose strokes, infusing my work with a sense of energy and movement that creates a broad range of emotions. By blending styles of expressionism and realism in oil, my paintings seek to bring shared emotions forward and communicate the complexity of connection, while also celebrating the beauty and fragility of my relationships.
